I’ve finally got around to posting a handful of new projects. I’ve been experimenting with some new abstract illustration ideas and look forward to sharing them soon. There are a few in the works that are in the same style of the Transmutation tote, Less Life album artwork, and Dress Pattern.
Walton Ford - Paul Kasmin Gallery

Walton Ford’s show “I don’t like to look at him, Jack. It makes me think of that awful day on the island” is on display at
Paul Kasmin Gallery in NY from 11/3 - 12/23. I had the pleasure of attending his book signing on opening night. I waited patiently in line and when I handed Walton my books, I told him not to worry about having to sign it to my full name. I broke down the pronunciation and mentioned that it’s pretty long and hard to spell. He immediately turned to me and said “No way, you’re name means THE EAGLE in Italian.” He proceeded to sign all of my books “To Sal, the eagle.” It made me smile. If you have a chance check out this show, the paintings are massive.

I also managed to buy a signed lithograph! Can’t wait to get it back from the framer.

My good buddies Alex and Max have just launched a website for their new woodworking company, Wishbone Woodworking. Attatched are photos of the tables they just built for me. The coffee table was built to showcase my Florian Bertmer “Hexenbrett” (custom, laser engraved ouija board art piece.) The table was constructed around the concept of “levitation.” Notice how the table top, ouija board, and planchette look as if they are floating. They also built me two matching side tables. I am so grateful to have these pieces. They look amazing.

They are super talented individuals so if you have a moment please check out their new site.

LESS LIFE - LP Artwork

Wow I’ve really been slacking on updates this year. it’s time to change that. I hope to have a site update in the next few weeks. Until then, here’s the LP artwork I did for my good buddy Tom’s band LESS LIFE.

The LP was released in September on How Soon is Now Records. Chris from h.s.i.n was nice enough to send me a copy of every color from the pressing. I am very partial to the clear vinyl with black swirls.

You cave view the full artwork under the projects section here

I was excited to receive this piece in the mail last week! Moon Editions teamed up with Florian Bertmer to create a beautifully intricate, laser engraved Hexenbrett (German for Witches Board). Limited to an edition of 50, Brett from Moon Editions emailed to congratulate me on scoring the last one.

I have some big plans for this piece and my talented buddies over at Wishbone Woodworking will be behind the craftsmanship!

Spring 2011! Only 4 months into the year and I’ve finally got around to posting an update. So, it’s been awhile. While the northeast was burried in snow for the past few months and everyone settled into hibernation, I took every opportunity to try and get out of the city.

Katie and I traveled Indianapolis for the Holidays to hang with her family. Right after New Years we had an amazing 2 week trip to Hawaii. It was definitely rad to celebrate my 31st birthday on the beach. Since returning home, I’ve been working with my buddies over at Vault49 . They needed some help on some projects and it’s been really great working with those guys again.

If you haven’t gotten a chance to check out Marcel Dzama’s “Behind Every Curtain” in NYC at David Zwirner gallery, it closes this weekend! Get over there!

His work has definitely evolved a great deal since I’ve had the pleasure of viewing his “Even the Ghost of the Past” exhibition back in 2008. Two weeks ago I attended his book signing. Needless to say, I was stoked to my book signed.

Autumn 2010

Autumn 2010 News! Wow, I’ve really been slacking on posts. After such a brutal summer, I’m sure that everyone in NY is happy that Autumn has finally arrived. It’s by far my favorite season, yet such a short one. I’m sure that a week or two after I post this we’ll end up getting snow.

This summer was a busy one. I was working on some really great projects. Some of which lasted a few months. It just so happened that with the arrival of Fall, I managed to put the finishing touches on a few. Now, with my workload slightly reduced, I’ve been taking some time to travel, visit some friends, and work on some personal artwork. Read More

Autumn started out with a visit down to Richmond, VA. I had such a blast and got to see so many good friends. I only wish I could see those guys/girls more often.

Last month I traveled to London. My first time back in town since 2006 when I had stayed for a whole month. Oh english breakfast, how I’ve missed you! It was great getting to catch up and hang with London buddies while checking out some local art events. The Ai Weiwei exhibit at the Tate Modern was awesome. I can now say that I’ve stood on top of 100 million hand painted porcelain sunflower seeds. Check! Such a shame that I had to leave right before the launch of the Moniker Art Fair. I was also supposed to visit Berlin but there was an error with my flight booking. Double Bummer.

After returning home, I went up to Massachusetts to visit my cousin and partake in some fall festivities. Leaf peepin’ and picking! Halloween in NY was an amazing time as always. My neighborhood neighborhood in brooklyn always has so many great Halloween events. I was also excited to be runner up for prom king at this year’s zombie prom. Now that I’m back and look out for some web updates in the near future.

Adam Neate - The Flock Series

I was introduced to Adam Neate’s work by my good friend Mark Mark back in 2006. My wife and I were visiting London that year and we were lucky enough to catch one of Adam’s solo exhibitions. Needless to say, I have been a fan ever since. Two weeks ago, I happened to be back in London on holiday and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Adam was exhibiting a new series of experimental work. “The Flock Series”

Adam Neate has been experimenting with 3D/4D paintings for the last four years, and as many contemporary artists begin to embrace the notion within their own work, Adam has produced five extraordinary paintings which firmly position him as the master of the genre. The Flock Series exhibition consists of five works that will be on showcase at Elms Lesters that opened on October 12 and coincides with a limited edition book published to accompany the series. Price: £45.00

12 - 30 October 2010 Tuesday - Saturday 12 - 6.00 Thursdays ‘til 8.00pm or by appointment.
Elms Lesters | 1-3-5 Flitcroft St | London | WC2H 8DH

The show is only up for one more week. If you’re in London check it out, photos do not do it justice. If I’m not mistaken, Adam has yet to exhibit any of his artwork in U.S. If you’re interested in learning more, you can find some videos and links showcasing his work here and here.

Thank you to everyone that came out and supported the Matty NoTimes Benefit art show this past weekend. It seemed to be a huge success and I was happy to be able to contribute.

My piece was entitled “Enveloped,” originally a pencil drawing that I had laser engraved into wood.
Countless Rooftops - Sweltering NY Summer

Summer’s half over and it’s been a hot one. I hear the term heatwave getting tossed around a lot on NY1. This photo was taken from my rooftop, where I’ve been spending a great deal of time lately. I live in a top-floor apartment and it’s been a sweat lodge (6th floor) . More often than not, I’ll climb out the window and up the fire escape to my rooftop sanctuary. Breathe in all that fresh air. Wait…No…it’s just humidity.

Earlier this year my good friend Aaron from San Fransisco relocated to New York! A former Blue Bottle Coffee employee, he moved out here to open up his own coffee shop. After months of watching all of his hard work Caffetteria Soho is now open! Dripping the freshest coffee blends, courtesy of beans from the Blue Bottle Coffee Company. If you are in the soho area stop in and check it out.

One month from today! There will be a benefit art show for Matty NoTimes at Yes Gallery in Greenpoint Brooklyn. I collaborated with good friend Alex Mcwatt on a flyer and poster to promote the show. I will also be submitting artwork. For a complete list of the participating artists or if you would like to download hi-res flyer or poster, visit www.threekingstattoo.com/benefitartshow

Please check out the new Computer Arts Projects Magazine Issue 136. I created the cover artwork and did a short interview spread. It came out in the UK a little over two weeks ago but should be hitting stores in the US this week. The brief called for something primarily character based and referenced a project that I had previously done for Nickelodeon. It was alot of fun to work on. Click here to see additional images.

My wife and I recently returned home from an amazing trip in Japan. We arrived just in time to catch the Cherry Blossoms in full bloom. We were out there for 11 days and managed to hit Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara. A few of the highlights were: the The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Katie getting tattooed at Three Tides in Osaka, Celebrating Katie’s 30th Birthday with our friend Yagi in Tokyo, amazing street food, visiting numerous Shrines and Temples in Kyoto, spotting some Geisha at night, the Tsukiji Fish Market, and Yagi taking us to his favorite bars and restaurants in Tokyo.
I am very pleased to announced that I moved my design art studio to Greenpoint Brooklyn! The fine folks over at Three Kings Tattoo have just expanded their shop to another floor. They happened to have an extra office space and I was more than happy to move in! I used to rent an office space in Williamsburg before moving out to Clinton Hill. It will be nice to be back in the old hood to run my daily operation (rip guru). Three Kings have such talented roster of artists and i’m really looking forward to hangin/collabin with everyone. Come out and get tattooed! Or if you’re in the area stop by and say hello.
